Sugar Land Chiropractor: Dr. Edward Kaemmerling
“Are you out of your mind, why would I ever take a child to a chiropractor!”
“We told some friends that our pediatrician recommended putting tubes in our 2 year old’s ears. They said we should take him to see their chiropractor for his ear infections instead. I said sure, but inside I was screaming."
Our son, Micah and his recurrent ear infections brought me to chiropractic. By Micah’s second birthday, and 11th round of antibiotics, our pediatrician recommended tubes in his ears. We were exasperated, he was still sick and we didn’t want surgery.
We were desperate for hope.
They were strangers and Amway Salesmen, but they seemed like a normal couple with two young boys and over time became close friends. Once hearing our plight, they recommended we take Micah to their chiropractor. I said “sure”, but a voice in my head was screaming, “Are you out of your mind, why would I ever take my son to a chiropractor!”
After another six months of frustration and more of the same, we called Dr. Hyman their chiropractor. Dr. Hyman was professional, thorough and patient as we asked many questions. She gently adjusted three vertebra in Micah’s spine that were misaligned with nothing but smiles and giggles from him. Within two to three days his ear infection was gone. He’s almost seventeen now and still hasn’t had another ear infection.
Born and raised a Texan, it was hard to leave the state, but my chiropractor told me that if I wanted to be a chiropractor, I had to study where chiropractic began; Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. It was a huge move with my wife and four children, but we enjoyed the seasons, the snow and the friendly people.
During my time at Palmer, I learned that the body is fantastically made and its ability to heal is amazing! In addition, I was taught to respect the spine; to only adjust a vertebra if it was misaligned and to leave it alone if it was not.
“Chiropractic is specific or it is nothing!” I was very impacted by this concept and I received in my education at Palmer College of Chiropractic.
This expression communicates that each vertebra in your spine is either aligned properly or misaligned. And as a chiropractor, it is my duty to locate which vertebra are misaligned or subluxated, to determine the direction and degree of the vertebra’s misalignment and to deliver a specific force to that subluxated vertebra that facilitates a repositioning of the vertebra to a more mobile and functional position in your spine.
When I first heard this quote, it struck me as paramount to my belief in chiropractic . Either I am locating your subluxated vertebra and crafting my care to correct your specific misalignments and in turn free your nervous system to function more optimally, or I am just moving bones in your spine.
There’s more to chiropractic than the relief of headaches and back pain!
Our primary goal is to improve the integrity and function of your nervous system, which controls and regulates every cell of your body. The moving bones of the spinal column can impair this vital communication between your brain and your body. We can help improve the functions and structure of your body by reducing the nervous system compromise. The result, even non-spinal related health problems can show improvement; without drugs or surgery.
Dr. Kaemmerling was born in Houston and raised in the Piney Woods of East Texas. After graduating from Lufkin High School, he attended Baylor University in Waco, Texas where he majored in Church Music and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Music.
While at Baylor, he met Beverly Hendricks at a college bible study. After dating and becoming close friends, he asked for her hand and they married in 1990. In the following years, he worked in church music as he and Beverly began their family.
In July of 1999, after working full time and completing a year of prerequisites, he and Beverly moved to Davenport, Iowa with their children, Obadiah, Micah, Rebekah and Kate to begin chiropractic school at Palmer College of Chiropractic. With the tremendous sacrifice and support of his family, Dr. Kaemmerling graduated as a Doctor of Chiropractic with honors and as Salutatorian of his class with a GPA of 3.97.
Currently, Dr. K, Beverly and their family reside in Rosenberg, Texas with their children attending school at Terry High and George Jr. High. Music is a big part of the Kaemmerling household with two children in school band. Mom and Dad are both involved with the Terry High Band Boosters and Beverly serves as Co-Treasurer.
The Kaemmerling’s are very active at Grandview Fellowship Church in Sugar Land, Texas as corporate worship is a priority in their home. Micah uses his talents by playing the trap-set for the worship services and Beverly co-leads a women’s bible study and since this is a church plant, the family helps back up the portable church each week after services.
Second Career
Chiropractic is a second career for Dr. Kaemmerling who has always loved music, singing and playing guitar. He also loves to teach, entertain and interact with children. These interests have led him to teach music each week at two Montessori schools and a Kid’s-R-Kids pre-school. It’s guitar, puppets, rhythm instruments, fun songs and a lot of energy! As a result, Dr. K, (alias Mr. Ed), is quite popular and has an exuberant fan base made up of two hundred plus children under age 6.
My mom tells me I was an active toddler and I don’t remember a time of sitting still for very long as a kid. By the time I was five, I was riding my bicycle all over and miles from home. Of course, the late sixties and early seventies were a much safer time for kids and so my friends and I would play outside all day. Because of this, I’ve always enjoyed the outdoors and exercising in fresh air. This desire for activity was natural for me and a way of life.
Through college, I ran and bicycled competitively as an amateur. My best friend in college and running buddy always said “You gotta be there to be there.” When the run begins you have to stay with the lead pack so that when they make their move at the end of the race, you are positioned to have a chance to win the race. So, I’ve always pushed myself to do my best to compete and know that I gave it my all.
After college, my best friend and I planned a hiking trek down the Appalachian Trail. My brother and I biked around the state of Texas for two weeks averaging 125 miles each day. I ran the Houston marathon in 2005 and rode a two day 180 mile bike ride from Houston to Austin for Multiple Sclerosis.
In the last ten years, my responsibilities have grown...
These responsibilities make it more difficult to carve out the time for a lifestyle of exercise. However, chiropractic was the catalyst for me to see that my health is vital to my quality of life and that no one else can or will be healthy for me.
If I want to be full of life physically, mentally and spiritually, I must provide a routine steady diet of exercise for my body, healthy encouraging and productive thoughts and a daily understanding of my need for grace and direction from a loving Savior.
These are conscious choices we all make daily; to put our health off or to invest our time and energy to not just survive life and its challenges, but to zestfully and exuberantly LIVE life!
So, I choose to live. I ride my bicycle and run regularly. I eat lots of unprocessed fruits, vegetables and proteins.
I love reading and discussing books that stimulate my mind. I read the Bible and look for opportunities to discuss love, grace, forgiveness and our relationships. I take time to compliment, encourage and learn from the people I see during my day.
And I spend $50 and eight hours traveling every two weeks to get my spine checked and adjusted by a fellow chiropractor.
I reside in a 47 year old body, but I have a lot of life I want to live and I’ve “gotta be there to be there!”
